the royal enfield classic 500 EFI.. a first hand review..

First lets get done with the good things:
1. the bike only looks like a classic.. performs almost as well as most contemporary japanese/ american bikes.
2. the bike does make heads turn.. on my first 100km trip, quite a few people stopped to ask abt the bike.
3. The suspension on the bike, and the coil springs under the seat for the rider are perfect. Riding the bike over most bumps, speed breaks, ditches.. caused hardly any discomfort.
4. The thump, though a little muted, is still there.
5. The headlight on the bike is one of the most powerful ive seen on a motorcycle in india yet (as expected from the enfield stable)
6. the electric start works beautifully and literally purrs to life the 500cc monster of an engine.

and now.. for the bad..
1. maybe a personal thing, but i wasnt comfortable with the round rear view mirrors..the field of vision would have been much more functional/useful with a rectangular mirror..
2. The lack of a fuel gauge on the central instrument console, can leave u guessing as to how much more can u travel without having to fill the bike.
3. Im not sure if its only to do with my bike, but shifting gears can be quite tricky.. i often found myself having to use the clutch action twice to actually change the gear.

the unknown:
1 since the motorcycle is new, i need to maintain a max speed of 60kph until i run in the engine.. hence i have no idea how the bike performs at high speeds or what its max speed is.
Though, at 60kph..a slight touch of the accelerator was only required.. i suspect the machine is capable of easily touching the 130kph mark(as mentioned by manufacturer) without any problems..

overall, very impressed with the first "bull" in my life..
hope to clock up 500 in a weeks time, after which it will be due for its first service..
till then.. happy and safe motoring!
