the liftman..

I was in Chennai for almost 3 weeks.. doing my LOFT flying in June.
Everytime I got into the lift to go to the Dispatch before and after a flight..
I coulnt help but notice this old guy who used to always stand at attention inside the lift. His job?"lift operator" as boldly printed across his airport pass.
in other words, just to press the button marked "2" and the button marked "G" as the situation demanded. For most of the people who used that lift, he was just someone who was doing his job. the end.
Somehow, I got into the habit (not on purpose, offcourse!!!) of wishing him and thanking him everytime i used the lift.

after a couple of days, i noticed the man was visibly very pleasant and smiled everytime i thanked him.And when i say this, im not talking abt the fake "yea, sod off, u overpaid jackass" smile...
no.. this was different, it was genuine....warm...and the pleasantness was almost contagious..

Now when i think about it, if such a small gesture made him feel appreciated and helped make his drab day a tad better...
i am indeed bound to try and be a bit nicer to ppl around me, whose services i tend to take for granted.

thanks to that liftman!
